Channels, a special feature rolled out by WhatsApp that enables celebrities and other entities to reach a broader audience with one-to-many messaging, is making its way to everyone”s mobile. Channels will be accessible to almost every single mobile user by September 19, WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart said.
Despite the massive rollout, Channels was not accessible to everyone. However, the “enigma of the arrival” has now been resolved, as WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced on Tuesday that Channels “will likely be available to almost EVERYONE by the end of tomorrow!”
Channels, with its design and functionality, promotes interactivity. That means users can push emoji reactions and forward messages to individual and group chats.
To distinguish between regular chats and Channels, WhatsApp has created a separate section for the latter. By default, Channels are filtered by country, prioritizing content from your locality. However, you can customize your experience by filtering updates based on newness or followers.
With the introduction of the Channels feature, WhatsApp has gained an edge over its peers, such as Telegram and Discord. Channels offer a one-to-many messaging format, catering to brands, celebrities, and a range of other entities wishing to disseminate updates to a broader audience. Earlier, the usage of Channels had been restricted to some areas, questioning the universality of the feature.
