Imagine logging onto your favourite social media platforms and seeing AI-powered characters alongside your friends and family. This might soon become a reality as Meta plans to introduce AI bots on Facebook and Instagram.
According to a recent report by the Financial Times, Meta is working on a new project that will allow users to create AI-generated characters on both Instagram and Facebook.
These AI bots will have their own profiles, complete with bios, profile pictures, and the ability to generate and share content powered by AI.

The report indicates that to maintain its user base and attract a younger audience, the company will introduce several new AI products, including one that assists users in creating AI characters on both Instagram and Facebook.
Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice-president of product for generative AI, explained that these AI bots will exist on the platforms just like regular user accounts. They will be able to interact with users, share content, and even help flag fake news.
But how will these AI bots be created?
Meta’s AI Studio allows users to create AI characters based on their interests and even develop a digital extension of themselves.
This AI Studio platform currently allows users only in the United States to create AI characters based on their interests. The platform is expected to be expanded to other countries later this year.

While the idea of AI bots on social media might seem exciting, it also raises some concerns. On the one hand, these AI bots could help combat fake news and provide users with more accurate information. On the other hand, they could also be used to spread misinformation and propaganda.
