European Commission urged for an increase in the basic fee, under the Schengen Visa, which can expect to see a price hike in the next few months. It is to be mentioned that Schengen countries allow unrestricted movement in and out of them with a special permit system, the Schengen Visa system.

What is Schengen Visa 

Schengen Visa covers multiple countries that make it cost-effective to explore Europe as visitors are required to obtain only a single visa. Individuals having this visa can move freely across these countries without border controls. It opens the door to different culture and geographical landscapes across Europe.

Schengen area comprises of 27 European member countries that function under a common visa policy with respect to international travel. The citizens of the area countries get a seamless travel without the requirement of visa under a 90-days visa free rule. Additionally British Nationals and Citizens from Canada, America and Australia are not required to apply for the Schengen Visa.

Countries covered under the Schengen Visa includes Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The overseeing authority undertakes visa fee revision every three years based on general European Union (EU) inflation rate. The body is also planning to raise the fee even more for countries showing insufficient cooperation on readmission for citizens found to be illegally staying in the Schengen Area. The body says that mandating a higher price for non-cooperative countries will push them for greater collaboration on better policy enforcement.

According to the Euronews, if proposal for fee hike gets accepted, it will raise the fee by 12.5 for adults and children. The proposed price hike is seen considering the rising inflation rate in European Union.
