Vadakkan, the much-anticipated supernatural thriller directed by Sajeed A and written by Sajeed A and Unni R, is set to hit theatres next week. The film, which has already garnered international recognition, features music composed by Bijibal, with a special collaboration from renowned singer-songwriter Zeb Bangash.
Speaking to Timeline about her experience, Zeb described the opportunity as unexpected yet deeply meaningful. She revealed that she had long dreamt of singing in a South Indian language, particularly Malayalam, ever since visiting Kerala years ago with her cousin and fellow musician, Haniya Aslam. Despite not actively seeking the opportunity, she felt that the universe had conspired in her favour.
“I was fortunate enough to get a visa multiple times, and I made it a point to visit Kerala whether I had work or not. This collaboration feels like something I subconsciously manifested,” Zeb remarked.
The opportunity came through a friend based in New York who introduced her to director Sajeed A. Enthralled by the film’s concept, Zeb was even more delighted to learn that she would be working alongside the celebrated composer Bijibal. “I was over the moon. He is an accomplished musician, yet he carries his success with such humility and kindness,” she said.
Zeb praised Bijibal for his open-minded approach to collaboration, saying that he was receptive to ideas and brought an inspiring level of creativity to the project. “Hearing him put his final touch on our work was an amazing experience for me,” she added.
Vadakkan, which has been in the making since 2008, is a film deeply rooted in ancient Dravidian folklore and mythology. Sajeed A, known for his work in television and MTV series, waited for the right time and technology to bring his vision to life. Shot with cutting-edge cinematography by Japanese cinematographer Keiko Nakahara, the film blends eerie storytelling with innovative visual techniques.
The film has already made waves internationally, being the only Malayalam movie selected for a gala screening at the Cannes Film Festival’s Fantastic Pavilion in 2024. It was also showcased at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the Fright Night Film Festival in the US.
With a stellar cast featuring Shruthy Menon, Kishore G, Kalesh Ramanand, and Maala Parvathi, along with a compelling score by Academy Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, Vadakkan is expected to make a significant impact.
