Millions joined Sheikh Sudais, one of the nine imams of the Grand Mosque, Masjid al-Haram, in Saudi Arabia. The famous Quran reciter led prayers ahead of the 27th day of fasting in Mecca yesterday night.

Sheikh Sudais, also the president of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques of Islam; Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, also led prayers for the people of Palestine in his special Tarawih prayers.

“Oh Allah, Grant victory to our brothers in Palestine and free them from the occupation of the Jewish Oppressors. Oh Allah, protect Al-Aqsa Mosque from the aggression of the aggressors, and grant us a prayer in it before death.”

More than 2.5 million Muslims from across the globe gathered for Tarawih prayer masjid Al Haram. The night ahead of the 27th day of Ramadan is considered special as it comes under one of the speculated nights of Laylat al Qadr, the night of destiny. The night holds extreme importance for the Muslim community as “the night of al Qadr is better than a thousand months”, said Quran, the holy book of Muslims, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammed on this night .

Sheikh Sudais has led prayers for Palestinians before also. Before the ongoing brutal war of Israel on Gaza started, Sudais advocated for the normalisation of ties with Israel, which invited strong criticisms against him. He had pointed out how prophet Muhammad treated Jewish neighbours, noting the respect they maintained. He had made strong remarks against increasing Israeli settlement in Palestine, severely criticising the Jewish state against the “illegal occupation.”

He grabbed headlines over asking the Palestinian supporters to not to do anything but pray for the Palestinians. He said hat apart from praying for them, Muslims “should not let these temptations and events divide them” but rather let the scholars and leaders decide on what should be done about the situations and “not to engage in what they have no right to engage in”.

The Palestinians have been under the choke hold of Israel for the past 75 years. The latest genocidal aggression started when Hamas, the resistance group of Gaza attacked Tel Aviv on October 7th last year.
