The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution demanding that Israel end its occupation of Palestine within 12 months. The resolution, passed during the Assembly’s 10th emergency special session, calls for Israel’s withdrawal from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and compliance with international law.

The resolution was adopted by an overwhelming majority, with 124 countries voting in favour, 14 against, and 43 abstaining. India was among the nations that chose to abstain from the vote.

Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Hungary, Israel, Malawi, Palau, Papua New Guinea, United States are among the countries who opposed the resolution while, countries like India, Albania, Australia, Austria, Italy, Germany, Ecuador, Netherlands, Ukraine, Libya and Canada abstained from voting.

The resolution urges Israel to cease its unlawful presence and military occupation, dismantle settlements, and halt settlement activities in the region. It also calls for the evacuation of settlers and the dismantling of parts of the wall built by Israel within the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Furthermore, the resolution mandates Israel to comply with all legal obligations under international law, including the rulings of the International Court of Justice.

The resolution, however, marks a significant development in the UN’s ongoing efforts to address the long-standing issue of Israeli occupation in Palestinian territories.
