2024 is a year of elections. The world”s biggest democracies, including India, the United States, Indonesia, Mexico, and the European Union, are going to witness elections. Amid this, Meta is also constantly working to ensure that their platforms are secure and reliable. As important elections are approaching, the tech giant has formulated policies and safeguards as part of a comprehensive approach.

In a statement, which was released on November 28, Meta said that they invest more to protect elections online and added that they have around 40,000 people working on safety and security, with more than $20 billion invested in teams and technology in this segment since 2016. Meta also claims that they have developed the largest independent fact-checking network, consisting of nearly 100 partners, to review and rate viral misinformation in more than 60 languages. Meta strongly believes that their comprehensive approach will help them to protect the integrity of the 2024 elections on their platforms.

Nick Clegg, Meta”s President of Global Affairs, said in the statement that advertisers will soon have to disclose when they use AI or other digital techniques to create or modify a political or social issue ad in specific cases. This will be applicable in 2024. According to Meta, this rule applies if the ad contains a photorealistic image or video, or realistic-sounding audio, that was digitally created or altered to portray a real person as saying or doing something they did not say or do.

Meta also informed that they will block new political, electoral, and social issue ads during the final week of the US election campaign. Only ads that have previously run before this restriction period will be permitted to continue to run during this time. Meta will also label state-controlled media on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Meta is making these wide arrangements as they had previously faced severe criticism for not being able to handle misinformation.
