The co-founder of Netflix and a Democratic party megadonor, Reed Hastings, has called for Joe Biden to take himself out of the presidential race. The call came following Biden’s debacle during last week’s debate against Donald Trump.

Speaking to New York Times, Hastings told New York Times that the President need to step aside to allow a “vigorous Democratic leader” to beat Trump and keep the country “safe and prosperous”.

Hasting is one of the first major Democratic donors to speak out against Biden. Hasting’s remarks came as pressure mounts on Biden to step down over concerns that he is not fit for the job. The White House denied reports of donors and allies of Democratic party are urging him to drop out of the presidential race.

However, two House Democrats had publicly called for Biden to withdraw his candidacy, and another one voiced “grave concerns” regarding Biden’s ability to beat Trump in the election. Joe Biden is facing escalating pressure to step down from racing as a post-debate poll showed one in three Democrats believes the President should quit.

During a campaign, earlier this week, Biden blamed his poor performance on his busy international travel before the campaign. He said, he “nearly fell asleep on stage”.

Reportedly, some Democratic party officials have privately suggested vice-president Kamal Harris should take Biden’s place.

Hasting is a billionaire entrepreneur, who is credited with ushering in the streaming era. He stepped down from the post of Netflix CEO last year. Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, were prolific supporters of the Democratic party during the Trump administration and have donated more than $20m in recent years, including roughly $1.5m to Biden during his 2020 campaign, as per New York Times. Reportedly, the couple donated $100,000 last year toward Biden’s re-election efforts.
