Meet Zohran Mamdani Who Made History Winning New York Mayoral Election

New York, United States: Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani secured a landmark victory in the New York City mayoral election. Mamdani, a staunch critic of President Donald Trump is all set to become the city’s first Muslim Mayor.

The democrat defeated Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa to become the city’s new leader.

They include a plan to create New York City’s first universal childcare program, making city buses free and freezing the rent for 1 million rent-stabilized tenants in the city.

Mamdani has made several key proposals to transform the city. He has proposed a tax on the city’s wealthiest residents and an increase in the city’s corporate tax rate to pay for his policy ideas. His vision about the city propagated through grassroot campaign had stormed social media.

In November 2020, he was elected to the state assembly representing New York’s 36th district, becoming the first south Asian man, and one of only three Muslims to ever serve in the body.Notably, Mamdani is known for his outright support for Palestinian cause.

The Indian origin man, after winning the race, quoted  former Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru speech as India’s first PM. “Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru. A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance Tonight, we have stepped out from the old into the new. So, let us speak now with clarity and conviction that cannot be misunderstood that what this new age will deliver and for whom,” the new city mayor said.

“This will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders bold vision of what we will achieve rather than a list of excuses for what we are too timid to attempt,” he added.
