As festivities of Christmas were celebrated globally, individuals residing beyond the horizon of earth also joined in the celebration. Astronauts, who are currently at the International Space Station took to their Instagram handle to share glimpses of their Christmas celebrations. The images caught social media’s attention.
Andraes Mogensen, an astronaut with European Space Agency shared pictures of his with others clad in red, next to a small table decorated with a tiny Christmas tree. The group also hung up socks with each of their names written. He captioned his post as, “now it’s Christmas at Space Station too! Merry Christmas from our ‘family’ to yours. Hope your evening was as fun as ours”.

Jasmin Moghbeli, a NASA astronaut took to X (formerly twitter) account to wish “Merry Christmas” from the space station. She said while she miss “friends and family back home this time of year, I wouldn’t trade the unique memories I’m making with my space family”. She said those at the space station have found little ways to make the holidays feel like holidays up here”.

Loral O’Hara of NASA shared a detailed note on how the Expedition 70 crew celebrated Christmas, by taking a day off on Christmas and enjoying Christmas dinner. Christmas fell after a busy week for the team as they saw two cargo spacecraft depart the International Space Station (Space X Dragon and Northrop Grumman Cygnus). She said they also watched “National Lampoon’s Christmas vacation”, a 1989 slapstick comedy.

The Expedition 70 crew started its journey to International Space Station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft (MS-23) ON September 27. The crew will return to Earth in Spring of 2024.
