Ahead of Diwali, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty organised a special event to celebrate the festival at his official residence, 10 Downing Street. The event was attended by Hindu community including parliamentarians, members of Indian diaspora, entrepreneurs, as well as Bollywood celebrities.
His residence was adorned with marigold flowers and candles on Wednesday evening. Prime Minister shared the glimpses of the celebration on his offical handle on X. Sharing the images, UK Prime Minister”s office wrote: “Tonight Prime Minister Rishi Sunak welcomed guests from the Hindu community to Downing Street ahead of Diwali – a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness.”

In the pictures the couple is seen lighting traditional lamps, and walking down the well lit and decorated corridors. In another picture, Mr Sunak is seen interacting with guests. The tweet also conveyed Diwali wishes to everyone across the UK and around the world.
Diwali, hailed as the Hindu festival of lights, denotes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. This year, Diwali falls on November 12.
Mr Sunak who is a devout Hindu often visits the Southampton temple, UK. During the recent visit to India in relation to attending G20 Summit, Mr Sunak and Ms Murty visited Akshardham Temple in New Delhi and offered prayers.
Meanwhile, Mr Sunak and PM Modi in their recent telephonic conversation discussed the progress of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between UK and India. In the conversation, he also extended congratulation to Team India for their outstanding performance in the ICC Men Cricket World Cup 2023.
