With the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, securing a landslide victory at the UK general elections, the party has set a record with the victory of Sam Carling, the youngest MP in Britain.

The 22-year-old Carling has been elected as the new MP from the Labour Party for North West Cambridgeshire. Carling secured his win with a narrow margin of less than 100 votes, defeating Conservative candidate Shailesh Vara.

Vara has been defeated in his stronghold seat, which he has held for around 20 years. In the 2019 general elections, the veteran MP won with a majority of 25,983 votes. After five successful wins, Vara faced defeat with a victory margin of, reportedly, 39 seats.

The North West Cambridgeshire constituency covers areas south of the River Nene, including the Peterborough United Stadium.

A Cambridge University graduate, Carling previously served as the Labour County councillor for the West Chesterton ward of the Cambridge City Council. He held the post of Executive Councillor for Open Spaces and City Services.

With 5 seats to go, the Labour Party has secured a landslide victory by winning 411 seats.

Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi conceded defeat against Labour Party candidate Keir Starmer, who is set to become Britain’s next prime minister, in the country’s general elections.

Sunak’s Conservative Party won 119 seats, with Sunak retaining his constituencies of Richmond and Northallerton in North England. Eight Conservative cabinet ministers lost their seats in a big setback for the party.

Addressing his supporters, Sunak took full responsibility for the loss and congratulated his opponents on their victory. “Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future,” said Sunak.
