Bollywood actor Lara Dutta praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for standing by his beliefs while referring to the recent communal speech made by PM Modi during an election rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara on April 21.

During the promotions of her upcoming show Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond, Dutta said, “At the end of the day, you have to stand by what your beliefs are.” In an interview with Zoom Entertainment, the former Miss Universe said, “We are all humans, at the end of the day. It is very difficult to keep all the people happy all the time. If we (actors) are not exempt from trolling, neither is the PM of this country. We all take that in our stride. You can’t keep treading on egg-shells just because you don’t want to upset one side or the other side.”

She added that somewhere down the line, one has to be true to what their truth is and what they believe in. “And if he has the gumption to be able to do that, kudos. At the end of the day, you have to stand by what your beliefs are,” Dutta said.

Meanwhile, her co-actor Jimmy Shergill said that unpatriotic Indians need to do a reality check on themselves.

Several opposition parties and leader including Congress, TMC and CPI(M) have complained to the Election Commission of India (ECI) urging the poll panel authority to take action against PM Modi for his “hate speech.” Additionally, over 2,200 Indian citizens have also signed a petition requesting the EC to look into the matter.

During an election rally in Rajasthan, PM Modi claimed that Congress was aiming to redistribute the wealth of the people to Muslims, referring to the manifesto of the opposition party and former PM Manmohan Singh’s remark that the minority community had the first claim on the nation’s resources.  The speech also included the prime minister referring to Indian Muslims as “infiltrators” and “those who have more children.” Later, the PMO clarified that the former PM’s reference to “first claim on resources” refers to all the “priority” areas, including programmes for the upliftment of SCs, STs, OBCs, women and children and minorities.

Releasing on JioCinema on April 25, Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond follows the events post the Pulwama attacks. The story will focus on the response to the attacks to bring back the captured pilots and battling Pakistan’s lies in global media in the age of modern warfare.
