Heavy Rainfall: IMD Issues Red, Orange Alerts In Southern States

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert in Kerala and Mahe expecting a heavy rainfall during 20-23 May. IMD forecasted that heavy rainfall is expected to be in southern and northern India until May 23.

In a post on X (formerly twitter), IMD wrote: “Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall (> 204.5 mm during 20-22 May and heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.5 mm) on May 23, 2024”

The weatherman has also issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 20th and 21st May due to very heavy rainfall (115.5- 204.5 mm). Coastal Karnataka is likely to experience rainfall on May 21 and 22. Similar situations will be expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana and Rayalaseema with scattered light to moderate rainfall, IMD observes. Besides, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is also expected to experience moderate rainfall over the next seven days.

Amid the heavy rainfall in southern states, heat waves have gripped North India, including several parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Delhi. The national capital has recorded a steady climb in temperature reaching 47.8 degrees in some parts of the city. IMD statement said that the southwest monsoon will likely to hit kerala on May 31. Gradually, as the monsoon progress toward northern states, it will get relief from scorching summer temperature by mid-June.

Similar situations are prevailing in North East states, expecting 30-40 kmph gusty winds over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Orange alert is predicted for Assam and Meghalaya. IMD said that widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
