BJP's Daggubati Purandeswari Wins Andhra Pradesh's Rajahmundry Lok Sabha Seat

It was a keen and intense fight between BJP’s (Bharatiya Janata Party) Daggubati Purandeswari and YRSCP’s (Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party) Guduri Srinivas, from the Rajamahendravaram Lok Sabha constituency.

Daggubati Purandeswari wins the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Andhra Pradesh’s Rajahmundry. She won the seat over the margin of 2,39,139 votes.  She won the seat by defeating YSRCP’s Guduri Srinivas, and Indian National Congress’ Gidugu Rudraraju.

It was a keen and intense fight between BJP’s (Bharatiya Janata Party) Daggubati Purandeswari and YRSCP’s (Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party) Guduri Srinivas, from the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency. Though Purendwesari is non-local candidate, the alliance between BJP, TDS (Telugu Desam Party), and JSP (Jana Sena Party) has played in her favour.

Purandeswari is a known figure in the Andhra Pradesh politics. Being the daughter of N T Rama Rao (NTR), she is a well-known figure in the state. Having completed her degree in Bachelor’s in English Literature, she did diploma in gemmology in 1996 and went on to establish Hyderabad Institute of Gem and Jewellery in 1997.

She started her political career in 2004 with the Indian National Congress. During her time in Congress, she served as the Minister of States in the Ministry of Human Resources Development in 2009, and in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2012. She also served as the Member of Parliament twice. In 2004, she was elected to the Parliament from Bapatla constituency, and in 2009, she was elected from the Visakapattanam constituency.

In 2014, she quit Congress over the conflict of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. In the general election of 2014, she contested from the Rjampet constituency, but lost. She was appointed as the BJP Mahila Morcha Prabhari, and state in-charge of the BJP’s Odisha unit, which she served until November 2020. Lat year, the party appointed her as the President of the Andhra Pradesh BJP.

Coming from an influential family, Purandeswari is a sister, sister-in-law, niece, and aunt to several prominent figures from the political field to film industry of the state. N.T. Rama Rao Jr, Taraka Ratna, N. Trivikrama Rao, and N Chandrababu Naidu are to name a few of the figures with whom Purandeswari shares close relation with.
