Edited by Hiba Anvar

Overcrowded train coaches have become a common sight sadly in Indian railways. Usually, most of the general and sleeper coaches are overcrowded. But a recent video of a fully-packed 2nd AC Coach is now circulating on social media.

The video was shared on social media and the railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was tagged on it. The user wrote on X, “This is not a General Coach. This is not a Sleeper Coach. This is not a 3AC Coach. This is a 2nd AC Coach!! The crowd has reached one of the most premium coaches of Indian Trains.”

Responding to the post, one of the users wrote, “And this is not the first time it’s happening. I too had a harrowing experience where my whole family stood for 6 hours from Mumbai to Vadodara despite having confirmed seats. All our complaints seem to fall on deaf ears. It’s an insensitive government.”

Criticizing the railway ministry another individual asked if the 2nd AC coach was in such a dire state, one can only imagine the conditions in 3rd AC and sleeper coaches.

The pictures of people sleeping on the floor of the Kashi Express have been doing the rounds on social media. Passengers have reported complaints regarding commuters who do not have reserved seats entering the reservation coaches and insist on sharing the seats. Earlier in an unfortunate incident, a TTE was pushed to death from a running train by a guest worker for asking the latter to show his ticket.

To tackle the issue, the Indian railway is planning to introduce more affordable non-AC trains. The new train will have upgraded second-class unreserved and second-class 3-tier sleeper coaches with features similar to Vande Bharat trains.

As per 2017-18 data, unreserved class accounts for about 93% of total rail passenger traffic while sleeper and AC class constitute about 4% and 2% respectively
