The summer paradises, Ooty and Kodaikanal in Southern India, have always been an attractive spot for tourists. However, to control the flow of tourists and preserve the Nilgiris’ ecosystem, the Madras High Court has recently mandated the use of an e-pass system for travelers heading to Ooty and Kodaikanal.
The Nilgiris district administration on Sunday launched a website to generate e-passes for entry into the district. Anyone wishing to experience the beautiful climate of the hill station will now have to register online to obtain the e-pass. This new rule will come into effect on May 7, 2024, and will be observed till June 30, 2024.
Tourists and commercial vehicles can register themselves at epass.tnega.org. While giving out the directives, the collector clarified that the now-imposed rule is only for registration and not meant for regulatory purposes. Hence, all those who are applying will be granted the e-pass.
Meanwhile, the residents of the Nilgiri district will not have to obtain the e-passes when they travel downhill and return home. And those traveling by bus will not have to apply for the same.
How to generate an E-pass?
- Log into https://www.tnesevai.tn.gov.in/
- Fill in the details including name, address, duration of the stay, etc.
- Enter the vehicle name along with the number and other details.
- Complete the process to generate the pass.
- Foreign tourists will have to register on the website using their phone numbers.
- Each person traveling in the vehicle need not obtain the pass.
The E-pass was introduced by a special division bench comprising Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar. By implementing e-pass, the court aims to collect details of the vehicle’s movement along the challenging ghat roads leading to these destinations. The court decision also addresses the issues of traffic congestion, particularly, along the challenging ghat roads leading to Ooty and Kodaikanal.
