Congress’ Vikas Upadhyay To Face BJP Stalwart And Minister Brijmohan Agrawal In Raipur

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Born in 1975, Vikas Upadhyay began his political life as a youth leader associated with the Congress party. He served as the general secretary of the All India Youth Congress in 2010. The 48-year-old politician has a total of 2,5 crore assets. There are two criminal cases also against the Mr Vikas Upadhyay. Mr Upadhyaya has been contesting assembly elections from Raipur City West constituency since 2013. While he trailed behind the BJP’s Rajesh Munat in 2013, He emerged victorious in the 2018 elections in which the Congress party swept the state.

However, Mr Upadhyay lost the 2023 assembly elections to the BJP’s Rajesh Munat. Notably, when the party announced his ticket for the Lok Sabha election debut from Raipur Lok Sabha constituency in its first list of candidates, there were reports as he is not contesting the election and hence will return his ticket. But, the Congress leader dismissed the reports terming it ‘fake’ and a ‘cheap political conspiracy’ to spread misinformation. He further said that being listed among the first 39 candidates of the party along with senior leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Bhupesh Baghel is a matter of pride.

BJP has been representing the Raipur Lok Sabha constituency for nearly two decades though the Congress had managed to give tough competition before 2014. During the 2019 election, the BJP has significantly improved its majority. The Lok Sabha seat comprises nine assembly segments, and the Congress has grassroots workers across all the segments. With Mr Vikas Upadhyay’s nomination, the grand old party is looking to wrest back the Raipur seat which it lost in the 1991 general elections.

Making the race stronger, the BJP has fielded the party heavyweight and the cabinet minister in the ruling BJP government in the state  Brijmohan Agrawal. He is also an eight-time MLA that too from two assembly segments that come under the Raipur Lok Sabha constituency. Congress’ Vikas Upadhyay will have to face the political clout of the BJP’s Brijmohan Agrawal in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
