Poonam Mahajan, a former president of BJP’s youth wing, secured electoral victories in 2014 and 2019, representing Mumbai North Central constituency.

He is famous as lawyer for cases like Murder of Gulshan Kumar, Marine Drive rape case, Khairlanji massacre, Mumbai gang rape, murder of Pallavi Purkayastha, murder of Preeti Rathi, Kopardi rape and murder case, Mohsin Shaikh’s murder case, 1991 Kalyan bombing, 1993 Bombay bombings and 2003 Gateway of India bombing.

While talking to Times Now, Mr Nikam said he is proud about the moment and in politics, one can and serve the people of this country.

“Ujjwal Nikam has been a renowned public prosecutor. Whether it was the 1993 bomb blast case or the 26/11 terror attacks, we know how he represented the state. We all talk about having good, honest citizens as representatives in public life. I think Ujjwal Nikam is a great example of a professional who has chosen to enter active politics and we welcome his decision,” said BJP leader Shaina NC to news agency ANI while commenting on the announcement.

With over four decades of legal experience, Nikam has earned widespread acclaim for his tenacious advocacy and his mastery of courtroom strategy. His name has become synonymous with landmark cases, particularly in the realm of criminal law. Nikam’s legal acumen and relentless pursuit of justice have led him to represent the prosecution in several high-profile cases, including terrorist attacks, organized crime syndicates, and instances of grave human rights violations.

Nikam’s career reached new heights with his pivotal role as the special public prosecutor in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case, one of the most significant terrorist incidents in India’s history.

Beyond his role in the 26/11 case, Nikam’s illustrious career is adorned with numerous other high-stakes legal battles. He has prosecuted cases involving notorious criminals, such as gangsters, serial killers, and perpetrators of heinous crimes.

Earlier this week, Congress named Varsha Eknath Gaikwad as the party candidate to contest the ongoing Lok Sabha elections from  Mumbai North Central parliamentary constituency of Maharashtra. Current Member of Legislative Assembly from Mumbai’s Dharawi, Ms Gaikwad is also the President of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC).
