During an election campaign visit to Silchar on Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose emphasised the need for India to have a woman Prime Minister, citing the current political climate in the country. Ms Ghose represents Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

The former journalist and current Rajya Sabha MP, who is actively supporting TMC candidate Radhe Shyam Biswas for the Lok Sabha election in Silchar, spoke to reporters about her party’s strategy and vision. She highlighted the TMC’s strong performance within the INDIA Alliance and expressed confidence in their ability to challenge the BJP effectively in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Ghose echoed the sentiments of AITC chief Mamata Banerjee, who has been vocal about leading the alliance against the BJP. The journalist-turned-politician’s presence in Silchar, along with that of fellow MP Sushmita Dev, added momentum to the campaign, with both expressing confidence about securing victory in the Silchar community.

The Silchar seat is set to witness a heated clash between the BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya, Congress’ Surya Kanta Sarkar, and TMC’s Radhe Shyam Biswas. Biswas is a former AIDUF MP from Karimganj while veteran leader Suklabaidya is an Assam minister and five-time MLA from the Dholai constituency. Belonging to the Kaibartya clan, Sarkar was a close aide of party MP Sushmita Dev.

Silchar is the sitting seat of the BJP, as party candidate Rajdeep Roy won the 2019 general elections with a huge margin of 81,596 votes.

The elections in the SC reserved Silchar Lok Sabha constituency will be held in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April 26.
