Though Dr Chandra Sekhar planned to field from Narsaraopet constituency in 2014, he failed to get a ticket due to several reasons. Even in 2019, he attempted to obtain Narsaraopet ticket, but TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu gave ticket to Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, who then quit the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and joined TDP. This time also, he was initially decided to contest from Narasaraopet, his candidacy then announced from Guntur as the sitting TDP MP Galla Jayadev informed his retirement from politics.

Guntur has traditionally been held as the battleground for the YSRCP and the TDP and in the upcoming election, Dr Chandra Sekhar is pitted against YSRCP nominee Kilari Venkata Rosaiah. Regarding his strategy to win the election, Dr Chandra Sekhar told in an interview with The New Indian Express: “My strategy is to be honest and fair. My life is an open book and everyone knows what I’ve contributed to the society as an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, and how I represented Telugu pride on international level. Frankly speaking, I didn’t enter politics to get fame or money, because I have both. All I want is to serve the people and I think that through this platform, it will be more intense.”
