Apple’s Smartphone Sales Drops While Samsung Surges

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

Samsung had been the biggest seller of mobile phones for 12 years until when Apple took over the position at the end of 2023, with iPhone. However, Samsung retained its position by winning 20.8 percent of the market share, beating Apple, which won 17.3 percent market share. The dent in Apple’s sales can be traced back to the drop in demand for iPhone in China market.

New reports show that Apple’s sale of iPhone has dipped over five million globally during the first quarter of 2024 as compared to the 2023. Due to the reduced demand in China, Apple has cut down on its orders last month.

As per International Data Corporation (IDC), the decline is worldwide. It said, among all the smartphone makers, Apple faced the sharpest decline. The research firm claimed that Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones in first quarters of 2024. The figure is down 9.6 percent down from the 55.4 million shipped in the same period in 2023.

At the same time, Samsung shipped 60.1 million phones during the period, which is approximately same from year to year. The Programme Vice President of IDC, Ryan Reith said “while Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter”.

Earlier, IDC said that Apple’s iPhone continued to gain the market share as the demand for smartphones has been continually dipping for years. The research firm expect local brands like Xiaomi and Transsion to grow while Samsung and Apple continue to hold the high end of the market. It said that Samsung is now in a “stronger position overall than they were in recent quarters”.
