Thunderstorms In West Asia: All You Need To Know

Intense thunderstorms are already sweeping across parts of the Gulf region on and expected to amplify on Tuesday, heralding heavy rainfall and posing a significant risk of flooding. West Asian countries including Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia have already announced several measures to tackle the situation. These including schools closures, remote working and travel advisories.

Here’s what you need to know:

Low Pressure System:

A low-pressure system over the Arabian peninsula has already deepened on Monday, coupled with an influx of moist tropical air, leading to increased shower activity.

Severe Thunderstorms:

A line of severe thunderstorms is expected to develop to the east of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, pushing into southern parts of the United Arab Emirates. Heavy downpours, hail, and blustery conditions are anticipated.

Rainfall Estimates:

Some areas may receive up to 40mm of rain within three hours, with widespread thunderstorms forecast to persist overnight and into Tuesday. Dubai, usually receiving around 7mm of rainfall in April, could see totals reaching 100mm or higher.

Northern UAE Impact:

By Tuesday evening, up to 40mm of rain is expected across northern parts of the UAE, with the potential for over 100mm in the northernmost areas. Dubai could receive up to 100mm, far exceeding its average April rainfall.

European Weather:

Europe has experienced unusually mild conditions, with record-breaking temperatures in Spain and France over the weekend. Cooler weather is forecast for the week ahead, with the possibility of overnight frost.

Record-Breaking March:

March 2024 was confirmed as the warmest on record globally, marking the 10th consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures. This trend is attributed to ongoing El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean.

Climate Concerns:

Climate scientists express concern over the continued breaking of temperature records, even as El Niño begins to weaken in the coming months.
