“The Anatomy Of Genocide”: UN Special Rapporteur’s Report On Israel’s Genocidal Activity In Gaza

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur presented a report on Israel’s genocidal activity in Gaza. She called the report “Th Anatomy of a Genocide”.  Talking to United Nations Human Rights Council, she aid Israeli aggression in the besieged Strip accounts to a genocide and called on countries to immediately impose sanctions and arms embargo on Israel. In her statement, Albanese also noted that Israel’s genocide against Palestinians is an escalatory stages of a “long-standing settler colonial process of erasure”.

Albanese said following six months of the unrelenting Israeli assault on the Gaza, it is her “duty to report on the worst of what humanity is capable of”. She there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Israeli assault on Gaza has met the threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide against Palestinians as a group.

Albanese said that one of her key findings is the that the Israeli military have intentionally distorted the ruled of International Humanitarian Law in order to legitimise genocidal violence against the civilians of Palestine.

She said the “overwhelming nature and scale of Israel’s assault on Gaza and the destructive conditions of life it has inflicted reveal an intent to physically destroy Palestinians as a group”.

Israel, which did not attend the session rejected the report by calling it an “obscene inversion of reality”.

Albanese’s Anatomy of Genocide reports listed violent acts committed by Israel. She said killing members of the group, or causing bodily or mental harm to the group’s members and deliberately inflicting the conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.

She noted that Israel has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 7th and a further 12,000 are reported missing, who are presumed dead under the rubble. Albanese pointed out that more than 70 percentage of the killed are Women and children, and the occupation force has failed to prove that the remaining 30 percentage are Hamas fighters.

The second violent act listed out by Albanese was that Israel has wounded more than 70,000 Palestinians and detained thousands of Palestinians, subjecting them to torture and mistreatment.

Albanese listed the third violent act as the destruction of Gaza’s life sustaining infrastructure, including hospitals and agricultural land by the Israeli occupation force.

She said the call for “violent annihilation” from Israel’s high-ranking officials aimed the military force on ground f Gaza is the “compelling evidence of explicit and public encouragement to commit genocide”.

Slamming the “outrageous accusations” by Albanese, Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva said that Israel “” utterly rejects the report” and its war is against Hamas and not against the Palestinian people.

US officials told news agency AFP, that US is aware of the report and found “no reason to believed Israel has committed acts of genocide in Gaza”.
