Calicut, Kerala: Islamic scholar, writer, and orator Muhammed Shameem has been honoured with the prestigious CN Ahmad Moulavi MSS Endowment Award. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Muslim Service Society (MSS) office in Calicut. Shameem, a native of Pappinissery, Kannur, is a lecturer in the Department of Comparative Religious Studies at Al-Jamia Al-Islamiyya, Santhapuram.
Accepting the award, Shameem expressed his gratitude, describing it as a significant honour. “This award, named after the visionary scholar CN Ahmad Moulavi, celebrates a legacy of inclusive religious discourses and the pioneering translation of the Quran into Malayalam. It is deeply humbling to be associated with such an illustrious name,” he said.
Shameem, a prominent voice in Kerala’s cultural and intellectual circles, is widely recognised for his scholarly works on comparative religion and his active engagement on social media platforms. The award committee, comprising Jamal Kochangadi, VA Kabir, and KC Salim, selected him for his contributions to religious studies and cultural discourse.
The award includes a cash prize of ₹25,000 and a memento. Past recipients of this honour include notable figures such as Sukumar Azhikode, Muttanissery Koyakutty, and K.T. Muhammed.
The award commemorates the legacy of CN Ahmad Moulavi (1899–1993), a distinguished Islamic scholar and reformer from Kerala. Known for advocating progressive Islamic thought and education, Moulavi played a pivotal role in modernising Kerala’s Muslim community. He championed scientific learning, women’s education, and rational inquiry, leaving a lasting impact on Islamic literature and social reform.
