MT Vasudevan Nair, affectionately known as MT, one of India’s most illustrious writers, screenplay writers, and film directors, died today in Kozhikode, Kerala, at the age of 91. MT was undergoing treatment for heart-related ailments and had been hospitalised for 11 days. His condition deteriorated following a heart attack on Tuesday, ultimately leading to kidney and heart failure. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, December 26, at 5 PM, at the Mavoor Crematorium in Kozhikode.
The Kerala government has declared a two-day official mourning on December 26 and 27 to honour the towering figure of Malayalam literature and cinema. As a mark of respect, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has postponed all government events, including the Cabinet meeting. “With MT Vasudevan Nair’s passing, we’ve lost a doyen of Malayalam literature who elevated our language to global heights. A true cultural icon, he captured the soul of Kerala through his timeless works. His steadfast commitment to secularism and humanity leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the cultural community,” the Chief Minister said.
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan also paid his respects, describing MT as a multifaceted genius whose works transcended literature, cinema, and journalism. “The passing of Jnanpith laureate M.T. Vasudevan Nair marks a profound loss for both Malayalam and Indian literature. As a writer, MT championed modernism through characters that embodied its sensibility, and as an editor, he published the works of modernist writers. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul attain Mukti,” the Governor said.
Tributes have poured in from across the nation. Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi described MT as a custodian of art and culture. “With the passing of Shri M.T. Vasudevan Nair, we bid adieu to a genius who transformed literature and cinema into powerful mediums of cultural expression. His narratives captured the depth of human emotions and the essence of Kerala’s heritage. A true custodian of our art and literature, his loss is deeply felt by the entire nation. His legacy will live on in every story he told and every heart he touched,” she stated.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal also expressed his grief, highlighting MT’s unparalleled contribution to Malayalam literature and cinema. “The literary and cinematic world dims today with the passing of MT Vasudevan Nair. A legend in Malayalam literature and cinema, MT’s works resonated deeply with the cultural fabric of Malayali life, weaving human emotions and societal dilemmas into unforgettable narratives. Over seven decades, he enriched us with many novels, short story collections, film scripts, and much more. His literary works such as Randamoozham, Manju, Kaalam, and Nalukettu have left an indelible mark on Kerala’s culture. His films like Nirmalyam, Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, and Kadavu remain timeless treasures. Rest in peace, MT. Your legacy will live on forever,” he remarked.
