Wheth: Shashi Tharoor Finally Found A Solution For A Malayalee Problem (image @ShashiTharoor)

Shashi Tharoor, who is often referred to as the ‘Indian Shakespeare’, has finally cracked it for the Malayalee population. While there is an alternative word for every other words, there is this one word in Malayalam which does not have an English alternative. But the politician has finally cracked the code for it.

While speaking at The Quizzitok Podcast with Siddhartha Basu, Tharoor was asked if he could invent new word, what would that be. The Thriuvananthapuram MP have answers ready.

In Malayalam, there is a word that suggest the ordinal number of position of any object or person, seeking to know their chronological order. The word is “എത്രാമത്തെ”. It is used to know what number position is the said object or person is at. While in English it is not possible to ask the question without creating a long sentence, in Malayalam it is simple.

Tharoor proposed the word “wheth” which can be used in place of “എത്രാമത്തെ”. According to the politician, the English need that word.

The other word that Tharoor said that he would like to invent is another word for ‘soulmate’. Not soulmate as in romantic way, but to refer to someone who is very close to one’s souls, the one who will complete the other. Tharoor said it can be anyone, and the word he proposed was “Atmami”.

The word is a combination of Sanskrit and French. Atma means soul in Sanskrit, and Ami means Friend in French.

Earlier, speaking at Pune International Literature Festival (PILF), Tharoor coined three unique words. including Omnivestatude, Atmami, and Aeternamour. The word is said to be designed to capture profound and abstract emotions.

During the session, Tharoor said that Indian English, while rooted in colonial history, has grown into a distinct and vibrant variant that reflects India’s cultural diversity.
