Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback: A Calming EV with Luxurious Comfort

Audi’s Q8 e-tron Sportback represents the pinnacle of luxury and electric innovation. Recently, Tata Power’s installation of eight EV chargers in several  housing complex marked a significant development, celebrated with a ceremonial ‘muhurat’ charge for the Q8 e-tron. Overcoming regulatory hurdles, these chargers enhance the convenience of owning an EV. The Q8 e-tron, known for its exceptional silence and luxurious ride, benefits greatly from this new infrastructure. Despite minor efficiency concerns, the overall driving experience remains unparalleled.

Tata Power has set up eight EV chargers which has been a significant development. The installation of these chargers was a big deal, overcoming resistance from the society administration and unclear regulations that had made it difficult for new EV owners to get a charger installed at their parking spots.

The Q8 e-tron Sportback is not just an electric vehicle; it’s a sanctuary of silence. With a daily commute of just 10km, I don’t fully exploit its low running costs, but the peace and quiet it offers are unparalleled. The Q8 e-tron is exceptionally quiet, even among EVs, and the silence is so soothing that I often forgo music, despite the excellent Bang & Olufsen sound system. The tranquility extends beyond the powertrain to include road, wind, and suspension noise, making for an extraordinarily calming drive. The suspension is a standout feature, absorbing Mumbai’s rough roads with a distant thud, creating a layered, insulated ride that feels luxurious.

With some of the road projects finally opening up, the Q8 e-tron’s relaxed driving dynamics are perfect for these leisurely drives. Despite its powerful motor, it’s easy-going and relaxing to drive. However, the proximity sensors are overly sensitive, often buzzing incessantly in traffic, prompting me to switch them off frequently.

One minor drawback is the efficiency. I’ve been averaging 3.7km/kWh on city drives. While the 114kWh battery provides a real-world range of over 400km, the Q8 e-tron leans towards the less efficient end of the spectrum. Nevertheless, the convenience of the new charging stations and the overall luxurious experience of driving the Q8 e-tron make it a worthy trade-off.

The Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron stands out not just for its electric capabilities but for the sheer luxury and calm it offers. It’s a testament to how far EVs have come, providing a serene and sophisticated driving experience. While the efficiency could be better, the overall package is compelling, especially with the added convenience of new charging infrastructure.
