Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Crash Test: Evaluating Safety and Performance

Bajaj has made headlines with the launch of the world’s first CNG-powered two-wheeler, the Freedom 125, priced at Rs 95,000. This innovative motorcycle features both petrol and CNG fuel options, with a 2-litre petrol tank and a 2 kg CNG tank, promising a combined range of 330 km on full tanks. Despite its exceptional fuel efficiency and low running costs, the safety of CNG vehicles remains a significant concern for potential buyers. To address these concerns, Bajaj has released videos of internal crash tests for the Freedom 125, showcasing its safety features.

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Frontal Collision Test

In the frontal collision test, the Bajaj Freedom 125 is crash-tested against a 1.5-tonne object, simulating a collision with an average mid-size SUV, at a relative speed of 60 kmph. Remarkably, the CNG tank remains stable and intact upon impact. The pressure gauge also stays in its original position, indicating no CNG leakage. This test demonstrates the durability and safety of the CNG tank in a frontal collision scenario.

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Truck Runover Test

The truck runover test subjected the Freedom 125 to a more severe impact, resulting in visible bending and deformation of the motorcycle. However, the CNG tank remained unscathed, with no visible scratches or dents. The pressure gauge again stayed in its original position, confirming no CNG leakage. Additionally, Bajaj conducted side impact tests and vertical drop tests, which also yielded the same reassuring results.

Safety and Features of Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG

The Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG is equipped with several modern features, including a reverse full LCD instrument panel, Bluetooth connectivity, LED headlights, LED taillights, and a USB charging port. The CNG tank, certified by the Petroleum & Explosive Safety Organization (PESO), is cradled within a trellis frame and weighs 18 kg when fully filled. The frame is supported by telescopic front forks and a linked rear monoshock for stability and comfort.

Powering the Freedom 125 is a 125cc single-cylinder engine that delivers 9.4 bhp at 8000 rpm and a peak torque of 9.7 Nm at 5000 rpm, paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The transition between petrol and CNG fuel can be easily managed through a switch located on the right-hand side of the handlebar.

With the release of these crash test videos, Bajaj has addressed the safety concerns associated with CNG vehicles, demonstrating the robustness and reliability of the Freedom 125. This innovative motorcycle not only offers impressive fuel efficiency and low running costs but also ensures the safety and confidence of its riders.
