Bentley Unveils New Continental GT and GTC: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

After much anticipation, Bentley has finally unveiled the new Continental GT and its convertible counterpart, the GTC. This fourth-generation model, while retaining the overall shape of its predecessors, introduces significant updates, especially under the hood. We traveled to Spain for an in-depth look at these luxurious vehicles.

Bentley Continental GT Exteriors

The new Continental GT marks a departure from its signature twin-headlight setup, now featuring singular oval units with eyelash-style LED DRLs reminiscent of the Bentley Batur. The headlights have an intricate diamond pattern, while the grille, featuring a diamond mesh, integrates a large radar dome and camera for the new ADAS capabilities. Despite the high-tech additions, Bentley has managed to keep the car’s styling neat and elegant.

The profile showcases a long bonnet and wide, flared rear fenders, with 22-inch rims standard. The active rear spoiler has been replaced by a deeper, boot lid-integrated unit, enhancing the car’s sleek appearance. The lights retain their elliptical shape but are slightly larger, maintaining the Continental’s distinct look.

Bentley Continental GT Interiors

Inside, the new GT maintains the luxurious feel of its predecessor. Signature elements like the organ stop AC vent controllers and the triple-rotating center panel, which cycles between analogue dials, a touchscreen, and a matching solid surface, remain. Quality is top-notch, with chrome and piano black surfaces providing mirror-like reflections.

New features include an ADAS package with an ‘environmental awareness’ display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and built-in apps like Spotify. The GT also offers advanced connectivity features, allowing for pre-cooling or heating the cabin and seats remotely. The 2+2 seating layout remains, with highly customizable interior trim options, including vibrant colors like orange and green.

Bentley Continental GT Engine and Gearbox

The most significant change is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid V8, replacing the W12 engine. The 4.0-liter V8, paired with a gearbox-integrated electric motor, produces a combined 782hp and 1,000Nm of torque, channeled to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The car features active torque vectoring managed by the center differential and individual axle brakes.

Bentley Continental GT Performance

Performance is supercar-level, with 0-100kph in 3.2 seconds, 0-160kph in 6.9 seconds, and a top speed of 335kph. The GT can also run in pure EV mode at speeds up to 160kph, with an all-electric range of 80km. The braking system features 420mm front and 380mm rear discs, likely the largest cast iron brakes on any production car. The suspension includes air springs and twin-valve dampers for a smooth yet responsive ride.

Overall, the new Bentley Continental GT and GTC blend traditional luxury with modern performance and technology, setting a new standard in the world of high-end automobiles.
