Chris Caputo, an experienced pilot, recently undertook a ground breaking journey from Burlington International Airport in Vermont aboard the CX300, an aircraft powered by batteries. The trip, spanning 16 days with multiple stops for recharging, marked a significant milestone in electric air travel.

For much of aviation history, the idea of electric planes remained a distant dream. However, technological advancements, particularly in battery technology, and substantial investments, including over $800 million raised by Beta Technologies from investors like Fidelity and Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, have propelled short-distance electric air travel into feasibility.

Beta Technologies, a private company with about 600 employees, has completed the construction of a factory in Burlington, signalling its commitment to mass-producing electric aircraft. Their flagship model, the CX300, boasts a sleek design with a 50-foot wingspan, large curved windows, and a rear propeller. Designed initially for cargo transport with a capacity of around 1,250 pounds, it will be followed by the A250, sharing 80 percent of the CX300’s design. The A250, equipped with lift rotors for vertical take-offs and landings like a helicopter, is envisioned for passenger transport.

Despite the exciting advancements, Beta”s electric aircraft, collectively marketed as the Alia, are yet to receive certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The company”s vision extends beyond individual flights, aiming to revolutionize air travel by introducing sustainable options for both cargo and passenger transportation.

The potential of electric planes goes beyond environmental benefits; they could transform connectivity, particularly in rural areas with limited air service. Caputo envisions electric aircraft connecting remote regions and foresees new opportunities in the aviation landscape. While the CX300 has demonstrated a range of up to 386 miles on a single charge, Beta expects customers to primarily use it for trips ranging from 100 to 150 miles.
