The Taigun SUV and the Virtus midsize sedans, are due to receive a major facelift which are Volkswagen India’s mainstream and popular models. The global launch of these updated models will be done after a year, and will go on sale by late 2025.

Both, Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan were launched way back in 2021 and 2022. The German brand has been trying to keep them fresh by introducing multiple special editions and variants and cosmetic changes. Volkswagen is also planning to become an EV-only brand in India by 2028, which indicates that the localised ICE- petrol and diesel models like Taigun and Virtus would be phased out.

The brand has realised that the transition to EVs will be more gradual than anticipated and EV demand will hit a plateau. Volkswagen has now decided to update the Virtus and Taigun along with introducing a under 4 metre compact SUV based on the upcoming Skoda Kylaq.

Both models get design cues and some sheet metal changes at front that bring them in line with the newer VW models globally. It will get more add-ons for equipment and additional technology like ADAS and other bits to make the offerings more competitive in their respective segments. The current 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines are compliant with emissions norms till the year 2027. But VW has to update models and bring some mechanical tweaks. With the mid-life upgrades for the Taigun and Virtus, Volkswagen India will have competitive products in the mainstream segment till the end of the decade to survive despite all the innovations by rival car brands in SUV and sedan segment.
