Air India Takes Flight Towards Sustainability: Introduces 'Aerowash' for Eco-Friendly Aircraft Cleaning

In a move toward a greener aviation industry, Air India has introduced an automated aircraft exterior washing and cleaning system called “Aerowash.” This innovative technology is designed to minimise water usage, with the potential to save up to 75,000 litres of water per year for each wide-body aircraft and approximately 30,000 litres for narrow-body planes. The adoption of such water-saving practices reflects the industry”s commitment to sustainable practices and aligns with global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation.

Features of the “Aerowash” Method:

The Aerowash system employs a robotic micro-fibre brush drum, enabling the cleaning of planes with minimal water usage. Traditional aircraft cleaning methods required substantial amounts of water, but advancements in technology now allow for more water-efficient processes. Air India anticipates significant annual water savings, almost 20,000 gallons for a single wide-body aircraft and nearly 8,000 gallons for narrow-body planes, depending on the aircraft”s size.

Following Vistara”s Lead:

Air India follows in the footsteps of Vistara, the pioneer among Indian carriers in adopting water-saving technology for aircraft cleaning. Vistara has already been utilising the Aerowash system, making it the first in the country to do so. The introduction of this innovative cleaning method in India is a collaborative effort between Air India SATS (AISATS), a prominent airport services management company, and AeroTech Support Services Pvt. Ltd.

Efficiency and Cost Savings:

Beyond water conservation, the Aerowash technology enhances time efficiency by reducing the ground time for aircraft. The automated process requires minimal human involvement, potentially leading to cost savings for airlines. This reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry towards sustainable practices and the adoption of technologies that contribute to environmental conservation.

Commitment to Sustainability:

In the context of the global emphasis on sustainable practices and green energy in the aviation sector, India is actively contributing to environmental conservation. There are plans for more than 90 airports in the country to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024. Leading airports like Delhi and Kochi are taking significant steps, such as the transition to electric vehicles and the use of solar power.

Airlines” Eco-Conscious Practices:

Airlines in India are increasingly embracing eco-conscious practices. For example, Akasa Air has designed crew uniforms using recycled polyester fabric sourced from PET bottles retrieved from marine waste. Air India has implemented measures like eliminating plastic water bottles and introducing compostable waste bags as part of their broader eco-friendly initiatives.
