Supreme Court Entrusts CBI To Probe Pan-India Digital Arrest Scam Cases

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday, December 1, directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to launch a unified pan-India probe into digital arrest scam cases, which the country witnessed in large numbers in recent months.

The top court, while hearing the case, asked the RBI as to why it  was not using Artificial Intelligence to find out and freeze bank accounts used by cyber criminals.

The Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi took note of three kinds of cybercrime highlighted by amicus curiae – namely digital arrest scams, investment scams and part-time job scams.

Stressing that the  investigation into digital arrest scams must be prioritised by the CBI, the court pointed out that such cybercrimes may involves extortion attempts or schemes to lure victims to deposite large sum of money.
