German Minister “Fascinated” Using India’s UPI, Calls It India’s Success Story

Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, made a UPI payment and said was very “fascinated” by it. German Embassy in India said through its X handle.

The X handle post said, “one of India’s success story is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @ Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments first hand and is very fascinated!”. A video accompanied the post, where he is seen paying through mobile phone UPI interface, the video has gone viral across platforms. The video can be accessed at the German Embassy India’s X handle.

The minister was at Bengaluru, attending the G20 ministers meet held on 19th. Earlier, in another post on X handle, the German Embassy, India said, “G20 Digital Ministers meeting in Bangalore is about to start. Minister @Wissing & our great host Minister @ Ashwini Vaishnaw have an insightful discussion on deepening Indo-German cooperation in IT and especially AI through our Digital Dialogue,” reported the HT.

The Unified Payments Interface or the UPI is part of India’s digital infrastructure, in which mobile phone-based payment can be made. This is an India exclusive invention. Through this application, payments are made simple and at any time, there is no need to carry cash at hand. As for now, countries that have partnered with India on financial technology and payment solutions are Sri Lanka, France, Singapore and the UAE.

A significant agreement was signed between India and Singapore on UPI mode of payment mechanism in February 2023. France has also signed an agreement with India on UPI mode of payment for transactions, beginning from the iconic Eiffel Tower, said the HT.
