Indians Are Arjun, Not Abhimanyu’: Rahul Gandhi Criticises Modi Govt Over ‘Penalty System

Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government on Tuesday for supporting the public sector banks’ penalty system for the common man. He described the ‘penalty system’ as part of PM Modi’s “chakravyuh” strategy, which aimed to exploit the common man.

Launching a scathing attack, Rahul Gandhi wrote on X, “In the Amritkaal of Narendra Modi, the ’empty pockets’ of common Indians are also being extracted. The government that waived off Rs 16 lakh crore of its industrialists has collected Rs 8,500 crore from poor Indians who are unable to maintain even the minimum balance.”

He in his post alleged that the government had waived off Rs 16 trillion dept of industrialists while they collected Rs 8,500 crore from poor Indians who are unable to maintain a minimum balance.

He was referring to the data revealed during the Lok Sabha session which highlighted that the public sector bank had collected Rs 8,500 crore between the fiscal year 2019-2020 as a penalty from customers.

“The ‘penalty system’ is the door of Modi’s Chakravyuh through which an attempt is being made to break the back of the common Indian,” he added.

The Congress leader concluded his post by reminding the Modi government that “the people of India are not Abhimanyu, they are Arjun”.

On Monday, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary also informed the Lok Sabha that state-run banks imposed ₹2,331 crore in penalties on depositors for failing to maintain the average monthly minimum balance during FY24.
