Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad. Gandhi, also the Member of Parliament from Wayanad, called the devastation unfolding in the area is heartbreaking. Several landslides hit various hilly areas in Wayanad in the early hours of Tuesday, killing at least 55 people, including one child, and leaving over 100 people feared to be trapped.

During heavy rain, the first landslide struck Mundakkai Town at around 1 am. While the rescue operations are progressing, a second landslide struck near Chooral Mala School at around 4 am.

“I have urged the Union government in Parliament to extend all possible support, including increased compensation and its immediate release to the bereaved families,” Gandhi said in the Parliament.

“Our country has witnessed an alarming rise in landslides in recent years. The need of the hour is a comprehensive action plan to address the growing frequency of natural calamities in our ecologically fragile regions,” he added.
