India’s minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal informed the Parliament on Friday that major ports in the country handled 795 million tonnes last financial year, 2022-23. The traffic shows an increase as it was 720.05 in 2021-22 and 672.68 in 2020-21.
The minister said the Indian Shipping Ministry is focusing on creating market enabling environment for trade. “Ports act as gateways for International Trade. Ports are moving towards PPP model wherein the terminals/berths are operated by Private Operators who have experience in international terminal/ berth operations,” Mr Sonowal said in response to a question asked in Lok Sabha by members of Parliament.
He added that these concessionaires act as a link towards augmenting trade relations between hinterland and international market through shipping lines.
He also informed that under the Holistic Development Plan for Great Nicobar Islands of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the ministry is entrusted with the responsibility of development of an International Container Transshipment Hub at Galathea Bay in Great Nicobar Islands.
He said the Port Health Organisation (PHO) module under SAGAR SETU – National Logistics Portal (Marine) that was launched by the Ministry will now be used to grant permission to ships to enter or leave the ports through this module online which will be bring in transparency, efficiency and Ease of Doing Business (EODB).
