UPI Rule Changes From Today: What PhonePe, Google Pay, And Paytm Users Must Know

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has rolled out a fresh set of UPI rules starting August 1, 2025, aimed at improving system performance and reducing pressure during peak hours. These updates affect popular platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and others.

Here’s what users need to know:

One of the most notable changes is the cap on daily balance checks through UPI apps. Until now, users could check their bank balance as often as they liked. From today, that number is limited to 50 times per day. This move aims to reduce the strain on servers, especially during high-traffic periods caused by repeated balance inquiries.

To ease this shift, UPI apps will now automatically show your account balance after every transaction. This simple addition could reduce the need for frequent manual balance checks.

Recurring or auto-debit payments—such as electricity bills, OTT subscriptions, and EMIs—will now be processed only during non-peak hours. These slots are scheduled for before 10 AM or after 9:30 PM. The goal is to reduce transaction load when most users are active on UPI platforms.

Users will now be allowed to access or retrieve details of their linked bank accounts only 25 times per day. This includes actions like updating or re-linking a bank account in the app.

If a transaction gets stuck, users can now check the status only three times, with a minimum gap of 90 seconds between each attempt. This is aimed at preventing repeated server hits that slow down overall processing speeds.
