In another shocking incident of institutional harassment, a dalit student pursuing a medical degree at the prestigious institute of India, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rajkot, has ended his life. The Rajkot, AIIMS, MBBS final year student, Ratan Meghwal, died by suicide after jumping in front of a train.

A suicide note has been recovered, in which Ratan accused Asmit Sharma and four others of physical assault and mental harassment. In a 17-page-long suicide note, Ratan disclosed the details of the cruelty and coercion faced at the hands of his peers since January 2026.

The five accused hailed from Rajasthan, Haryana, and Bharuch. They targeted the over a perceived relationship with a female student. The victim also mentioned a specific case of physical assault on January 27 and constant intimidation by the five accused.

All five accused have been booked under the BNS Section 108: abetment of suicide, section 3(5): Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

However, the investigation has revealed that the deceased had earlier attempted suicide after being harassed and reached out for help but no formal police action was taken.

The arrested students sought permission to take the final year exams, which has been granted under strict conditions as they will remain in police custody and transported from there to the exam centre.

This is another case of caste-based harassment that has taken another life. Recently, UGC has issued regulations to control caste-based discrimination at the institutions, which were largely opposed by the upper-caste people. However, such cases raise the question of the security of lower caste students at the institution.
