Delhi Police Detains Jamia Students Demanding Free Speech And Right To Protest Peacfully
New Delhi: Delhi Police has reportedly told to detain nearly 15-17 students of Jamia Millia Islamia over alleged charges of spreading nuisance on the university campus. The students of different student organisations in Jamia have been holding peaceful protests since February 10 onwards on campus, demanding the right to free speech and freedom for peaceful protests against any arbitrary decision by the authorities, a student leader told Timeline.
According to the information shared by the student with Timeline, the authorities have curbed the dissent against the arbitrary decisions on the campus by sending frequent show-cause notices, setting disciplinary committees, giving suspension orders, and sending notices to families and teachers or guides. In the wake of the blatant actions of curbing freedom and free speech, the student organisations, including AISA, IRSO, the Fraternity movement, and other student-led organisations, have conducted a peaceful protest on the Jamia Millia Islamia University campus, he told.

“The peaceful protest later turned into clashes between the protesting students and a group of a banned organisation from the campus. The banned organisation members were called to create a ruckus to give a negative impression to the ongoing peaceful protest,” he said.
“The Delhi police were called on campus to intervene and take action against the contesting groups. The administration has also sent disciplinary notices to protesting students, families, and teachers,” he added.
“Even after we kept our peaceful protest, the Delhi police have detained nearly 15-17 students and student leaders from the campus. We have traced only 30% of them. The location of the rest of the 70% is unknown,” he told Timeline.
Jamia Millia Islamia University issued a statement about the disciplinary action against the protesting students on its social media handle and called the gathering unlawful and disruptive to academics on the campus. The university also informed about the Delhi police intervention to maintain the law and order situation.
