Education Ministry's Survey Finds Decline In Degree Enrollment, Students Disillusioned Over Traditional Programs

New Delhi: Pointing out a transformation in education field, a recent All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by the central education ministry has found that the enrolment in undergraduate programs at higher educational institutions has declined for the first time.

The report has attributed the decline to increasing disillusionment and disinterest among young people regarding the value of higher education, especially the traditional courses and programs.

The report revealed that the enrolment fell by nearly 1 lakh students in 2023-24 compared with the previous year for Under Graduation. The report was prepared using data collected from 56,180 higher educational institutions (HEIs) in 2022-23 and 64,756 institutions in 2023-24.

The report highlighted that reluctance toward traditional degrees and the preference for vocational courses are the primary drivers of the transformation in the education industry. Notably, it found that the postgraduate enrollment has continued to rise.
