Mumbai: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has established 15 research centres of excellence across the country to promote DRDO-Industry-Academia collaboration. One of its earliest centres, the Centre of Propulsion Technology (CoPT) was established in 2016. This is a joint centre between IIT Bombay and IIT Madras with its headquarters at IIT Bombay. The foundation stone for the CoPT building was unveiled today by Dr. Samir K Kamat, Secretary, DDR&D and Chairman DRDO and Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director IIT Bombay.
The 7-storied building will also house the Department of Aerospace Engineering and BETiC (Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation Centre).
The building will come up next to the newly constructed Research Park building. Several dignitaries from DRDO, IITB functionaries, faculty members and staff attended the foundation stone ceremony. Centres such as these are expected to significantly increase research collaborations between DRDO, Academia and relevant Industries. Besides development of technologies for DRDO programs as part of various research projects that the centre undertakes, trained manpower in these niche areas will be also be produced. Dr. Kamat stated that establishing centres such as CoPT is a significant step towards enhancing closer collaboration between DRDO and Academia.
Further to this, a life-size model of the Akash missile was also unveiled by Dr. Kamat in the presence of Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri. IIT Bombay, particularly, the Aerospace Engineering Department had made significant contributions during the early stages of the Akash missile development program. The model is installed in the NCC ground next to the IITB Gymkhana grounds.
