IIT Bombay Launches Sustainability Policy Report

Hon’ble Minister of State for Education and Development of North East Region Dr. Sukanta Majumdar visited the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and chaired a review meeting with Institute functionaries to assess the functioning of the Institute.

During his visit, Dr. Majumdar launched IIT Bombay’s Sustainability Policy, the report of Pan-IIT Sustainability Conclave organised by IIT Bombay and the first newsletter of IIT Bombay’s Research Hub for Green Energy and Sustainability (GESH). Sustainability Policy includes Environmental education and Research, Environment conservation and management, improved housekeeping activities, safety aspects and governance. The Pan-IIT Sustainability Conclave was organised to initiate collaborative efforts among all the IITs towards Net Zero Campus. Several action points were identified to drive impactful changes for a greener future.

During the launch of the Institute’s Sustainability Policy, Prof. Anurag Garg, Associate Dean III (Infrastructure of Planning and Support) made a brief presentation on IIT Bombay’s Campus Sustainability Plan. Prof. Sanjay Mahajani, Professor-In-Charge, GESH spoke on expanding

GESH’s vision for a sustainable future. GESH is an initiative at IIT Bombay to enable research, education and related activities for sustainable development. It provides technical and financial support for research in the domain of green energy, sustainability and climate change. GESH also introduces new courses for academia and industry in the domain of sustainability.

While appreciating the work being done in the Institute, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said, “The excellent research and innovation activities of IIT Bombay will help in achieving the dream of Viksit Bharat”. He also suggested that IIT Bombay should work with young students and expose them to a research environment.

Dr. Majumdar planted a sapling as part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. This initiative reflects a deep commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. The meeting was followed by a visit to the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) and IIT Bombay Research Park (IITBRP).

Institute Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare welcomed the Hon’ble Minister in the presence of Deputy Director (Finance, Infrastructure and Administration) Prof. K.V. Krishna Rao and Deputy Director (Academics, Research and Translation) Prof. Milind Atrey. This was followed by a presentation on ‘Research and Development activities at IIT Bombay’ by Dean (R&D) Prof. Sachin Patwardhan, ‘Progress of Institute Activities under IoE’ by Professor-In-Charge, IoE Cell, Prof. R. Murugavel and ‘Overall progress of IIT Bombay’ by Dean (Strategy) Prof K.P. Kaliappan.
