IIT Jodhpur announced to offer of BTech courses in the Hindi language from the upcoming academic session 2024-25. With this move, IIT Jodhpur has joined the list of institutions that offer BTech (engineering courses) in Hindi language. The decision is to support the students who face challenges due to limited English proficiency. Earlier, IIT-BHU is the first IIT to introduce Hindi as a medium of instruction to the students in BTech courses.
IIT Jodhpur will start BTech courses in both English and Hindi languages. The institute will introduce two sections – one for first-year students preferring courses in Hindi language and another for English medium. Reportedly, the courses will be taught by the same instructors to ensure the same rigor in the teaching-learning processes.
According to the official notification released by the institute, the Senate in a recent meeting approved the decision to impart BTech courses in both languages. The decision was taken considering the role of IIT Jodhpur being an institute of eminence in the fields of technology, science, management, and humanities. The institute is committed to imparting education in the native language to students who face challenges in learning because of the lack of proficiency in the English language.

The decision is in line with NEP 2020 that aims to make education more inclusive and accessible for students in native languages. Considering the New Education Policy, many states have decided to introduce medical and engineering education in Hindi language. Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh have decided upon imparting MBBS degrees in Hindi languages to support students from rural background who are not proficient in English language.
The University Grant Commission (UGC) has also advised universities and colleges to use regional languages to impart education and to prepare a roadmap to successfully implement it across the country.
