
The filling up of the faculty positions rests with the Central Universities.
New Delhi: A total of 18,951 sanctioned teaching posts remain vacant in the Central Universities, Union government informed the Parliament. Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar shared the data, in a written reply to the unstarred question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Phulo Devi Netam.
The faculty recruitment in central varsities is a continuous process and the vacancies arise due to reasons like promotions, retirements, resignations, and on account of enhanced students’ strength, the Minister informed the parliament.

“As informed by the University Grants Commission, there are total 18951 sanctioned teaching posts
in Central Universities,” the Minister stated.
The filling up of the faculty positions rests with the Universities. Ministry of Education and University Grants Commission (UGC) regularly monitor the institutions and the Central Universities have been directed to fill up the vacancies in regular mode, the Minister added.
Established by an Act of Parliament, Central universities are fully funded by the Central Government and they fall under the purview of the Ministry of Education’s Department of Higher Education.
In order to address the faculty shortage, Minister stated that guest faculty have been appointed in the Universities on need basis as short term arrangement.
“Through special recruitment drives more than 8150 teaching positions have been filled in the Central Universities including 1112 SC posts, 544 ST posts and 1867 OBC posts,” Majumdar highlighted.

Special recruitment refers to Mission Mode recruitment campaign announced by the government where all Central Higher Educational Institutions (CHEIs) were asked to fill up the vacancies on a Mission Mode within a period of one year.
In August 2021, the Ministry issued instructions to all CHEIs to fill vacancies especially those reserved for specific categories in a Mission Mode. The recruitment drive in September 2022 pushed CHEIs to fill all outstanding vacancies, particularly in reserved categories.
