For students with low self-esteem due to poor communication skills or lack of English proficiency, IIT Madras started ‘Be Happy’ initiative using an online AI-based English learning platform. The institute informed about using ‘LANQUILL’, the AI-learning tool to help students speak confidently.
IIT informed about the initiative emphasising the role of communication in English to write technical papers writing, quizzes, semester exams, internship interviews, preparing project reports, placement interviews, and sharing general interactions with peers. The institution also said that the AI-inspired LANQUILL tool will be used to help students learn communication skills effectively.
The AI tool will help students to improve accent, pronunciation, and grammar by analysing real-time speech. According to the information provided by IIT, the platform will also help in writing, checking sentence length, sentence structure, punctuation, voice, and more.
Other features of the AI tool apart from the language- aspects include a language lab and a multi-media content library to enhance the vocabulary of students. My Language LAB dashboard of the platform will provide listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and quizzes to improve English proficiency. To improve the student”s understanding of English grammar through native language mother tongue support has also been incorporated.
Students can also enrich English language learning by undergoing a formal certification via a 7-level assessment procedure. The seven levels include assessment of grammar, vocabulary assessment, listening skills, reading skills, speaking skills, writing skills, and adaptive assessment.
To access the LANQUILL platform, Interested candidates can fill Google Doc form to get an access ID formed by the Librarian. The request for creating an ID to access the English learning tool will be accepted via the Google Doc form only.
