Indian Institute Of Mass Communication (IIMC) A Deemed University Now

India’s premier journalism and mass communication institution Indian Institute of Mass Communication has been declared a deemed to be university under distinct category. The declaration by the the Ministry of Education, on the advice of University Grants Commission (UGC), extends to IIMC New Delhi and its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha).

With this new status, IIMC is now authorized to offer degrees, including doctoral degrees.

According to a notification by the government, the Deemed University status is subject to the IIMC become compliant with the UGC (Institutions deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023 within a period of six years from the date of issuance of the notification and many other conditions set by the government for the status.

The other conditions include IIMC cannot engage or indulge in any activities that are of commercial and profit making in nature and the academic programmes to be offered shall conform to the norms and standards prescribed by the UGC and the statutory councils or bodies concerned.

IIMC can start new academic courses or programmes, off-campuss, off-shore sampus only in accordance with the norms and guidelines issued by the UGC, from time to time, on the subject, is another condition.

IIMC can also take appropriate steps to commence research programmes as well as doctoral and innovative academic programmes. “The Institute shall not keep confined only to presently new emerging areas but it make endeavour to expand in other areas in accordance with the UGC Regulations / Guidelines as well as National Education Policy-2020,” the notification said.

IIMC, according to the government, shall take all the required steps to get all the eligible academic courses or programmes rated for valid accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the Institute to get valid accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), as the case may be, in terms of the provisions as contained in the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023, as amended from time to time.
