FTII Pune And SRFTI Kolkata Now Deemed Universities: Education Ministry

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, have been granted deemed-to-be university status, the Ministry of Education said.

With this status, now, these institues can award not only diplomas but degrees and doctoral programmes.

The FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata have been given deemed-to-be university status under the section 3 of UGC Act with the approval from the Ministry of Education.

Now, with the announcement of university status both institutions can launch research and innovative academic programmes. They can also participate in NIRF Rankings and integrate with Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Both institutes will adhere to UGC norms and NEP 2020 academic programmes.

The landmark decision pave way for the greater autonomy, innovation and academic excellence in the film and media education.

FTII was established in 1960, as a department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Later one, the Television Training wing of the institute shifted to Pune in 1974 and was fully aided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In 2017, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) granted equivalence to 6 PG Diploma Programmes of the Institute with the Master’s Degree.

SRFTI, named after the legendary maestro Satyajit Ray, established in 1995, was the second national centre of cinema education as an autonomous academic institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Currently, SRFTI run three year postgraduate courses in cinema in with specialization of film making and two year postgraduate programmes in Electronics and Digital Media in six specialisations.
