JNU To Sack Prof Swaran Singh Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct Involving Japanese Embassy Official

Jawaharlal Nehru University has reportedly taken a decision to sack professor Swaran Singh, a professor from School of International Studies (SIS) over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a Japanese Embassy official.

The decision to terminate prof Singh was taken after the University’s Internal Compalints Committee (ICC) findings. The investigation findings were reportedly, presented at JNU’s Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

As per the reports, the said Japanese official was in regular contact with the professor in coordinating conferences. She filed a complaint with the university’s ICC along with the recordings of their conversations as evidence.

Also, three other faculty members came under the radar and disciplinary actions were also taken against them on the ICC recommendations. Two faculty members had three annual increments withheld, while a third, found guilty of inappropriate behaviour under a minor offence, was directed to undergo sensitisation training. They belong to JNU’s Centres for Historical Studies, Physical Sciences, and Sanskrit, respectively.

Prof Swaran Singh was a part of the Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament (CIPOD). The university got reports of the complaint in May Last year and ICC carried out a through investigation and found that Prof Singh had already faced misconduct allegations in the past also.

Earlier, Prof Singh resigned from his role as an associate professor at JNU following the similar allegations and rejoined the university as a professor. As per the reports, he had registered eight such sexual allegations complaint in his name.

Reportedly, the VC Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit said that the decision reflects the administration’s zero tolerance policy against sexual offences. For the first time, students have also been given representation in the ICC, she added.
